Social Impact of IT

Social Impact on IT

Economy

I.T has created many jobs for the public, for example there are always new jobs that are available, this is putting more money into our economy as more people are working so more money will be input into the economy, .  Jobs are lost because E-Commerce, people can go online to buy product instead of going down to the local supermarket. It also helps create jobs too, because anyone can set up a small business online, as the world is your market. The internet allows people to chase their own dream job they can train themselves and learn more about a topic through the internet.  You can check your bank account online too, to see what your balance is; you can also check how much money has been taken out and where it is money has been taken out. You can also check what payments you are behind on and what payments you will have to pay out soon.

Education

People who use IT can keep on improving their knowledge by using tutorials and video or audio lessons that take you step by step through the process of a task you are trying to complete and learn for future times, for example you can watch tutorial videos on how to design websites, solve problems, software tutorials or any other tasks, you can find anything on the internet there is always at least one video of how to complete a certain task or otherwise fix a problem. An example of a website which allows people to learn from video tutorials, would be Teach-ICT.com this website shows tutorials on how to use Dreamweaver Sometimes information on the internet can be incorrect or out of date, so need to make sure your source is accurate. You can learn anything on the internet, for example instruments.
When you are learning information directly from the internet, for example by Google searching an issue or problem can sometimes result in you clicking on a website that has inaccurate information that has been uploaded by some random person who has not much knowledge of the subject. Instead of pupils written out pages upon pages, they are able to use computers that allow them to produce work faster, and rather than the teacher giving out handouts to each pupil, the students can access Moodle and download assignment and worksheets, this saves paper and time for the students and lecturer.  Also in classrooms Interactive whiteboards are used to save time for pupils for doing research, if the teacher is explaining something, they can use a projector system that allows the lecturer to show what is on their own computer to the rest of the class.

Shopping

Shopping online is very popularly used in the world, as people can sit at home and order goods such as luxury items, food, games or furniture. Mostly any product can be bought online and be delivered to your home. That is why it is very popular; people can search on a company’s websites such as Tesco and Asda to order their shopping for the week and also get it delivered to their home. It saves time for the customer, it can affect other shops who don’t have the services to deliver, many people will admit that they could not be bothered leaving the house to go up and do the shopping, so rather than leaving and wasting petrol they can browse through a catalogue and choose whatever products they would like to purchase. All the products they choose are added to a cart then after selecting all the products the customer has to purchase them all together. There are no refunds mostly for shopping online because they had to pay to get them delivered, and some food products can not be returned. The customer pays with credit or debit car, they have to enter there account details.

Work

Jobs in the IT industry are increasing rapidly, there is always new technology being invented so there is always someone who needs to improve their training. The numbers of unemployed people are decreasing because more jobs are being created in IT and more people are taking courses. Jobs are lost because E-Commerce, people can go online to buy product instead of going down to the local supermarket. It also helps create jobs too, because anyone can set up a small business online, as the world is you’re market. I.T has changed the world it is unimaginable now to be in a world without IT and how much it has an impact on our daily lives. I.T allows people to work at home, it doesn’t matter if an employee is on the other side of the world, they can still access their business files and communicate with there employer or even other employees to help work on a project. Some jobs like for example a web designer is able to work for himself and work at home, as all he needs to complete his daily tasks is a computer and is can be taken anywhere around the world, he may not even need an internet connection to work on designing a website all he needs is the software that is used. This can save money on travel expenses to work each day and avoids the factor of being stuck in traffic every morning. You can work for people in Australia for example, can edit a photo and send it back just as easily as you could if you lived a few doors down. It can be isolating though, it can take people away from their social lives for example there is no breaks to meet up with colleges or friends if you are at home completing work. Some people may not work as hard as they would in a office because at home you can basically choose your own working hours, and may get easily distracted at times. When working for long period of time it is nice to come home and relax, as your home can be a place just to relax leave the work for in the office. Computers have replaced pen and paper; offices are just full of computers for employees to work on their word processing and software’s

Social

There can be an impact on the social life of people who are using IT too much, such as websites as Facebook and Youtube. Young people can follow trends on the internet that may be dangerous, or just unpleasant.  Also people can get too attracted to websites such as Facebook and would communicate more on that than you would in real life. You can loose social for example, may find it hard to make conversation in real life situations rather than on a social networking site.  There are also positive points of social impact of using social networking and mobile phones. Skype is used to make video calls and group video calls which allow a number of people to talk to each other free as long as they have a internet connection, this is called teleconferencing. They would talk into a microphone and sit in front of a webcam to communicate with each other; it’s very useful because the two contacts could be on each side of the world and they can talk as if they were standing beside each other. It’s a great way for people to stay in contact with old friends or to meet new friends.  You can also download movies online and watch T.V episodes using various websites, such as 1Channel.ch or Megashare.com. Anyone can access free without signing up and are able to browse from a collection of different movies and T.V Series. Also people can play games online for free and even download games that are compatible with xbox360 and ps3.

Threats involved in using IT

There can be negative impacts on IT, for example Cyber Bullying. Cyber bullying has affected a lot of different people around the world. People have been drove to suicide in serious cases of this. The Internet is open to everybody so you need to be careful of what you share with people over the internet. People can share personal images and then it can be put up on social media sites, and all friends and family are able to see these embarrassing/personal pictures, for example if someone hack into a persons Facebook and sends email and messages it can have a serious impact on their life. People have also been physically hurt by meeting up with people who they have met over the internet. On social messaging sites, people can lie and pretend they are young teenagers but really they are older and trying to meet up with young people on websites such as Facebook.

You should also be careful to what you upload to the internet such as personal details or telephone numbers because they can be accessed by mostly anyone with a valid internet connection.

Denial of service attacks can close down websites, this is done by hackers, hacking into a company’s server then closing down a website so their company is not functional.

Spamming is also an impact that most people face online, get spam messages that are advertising their products or business. When people are checking emails it can be full of spam messages from companies trying to spread the word about their new product. Also some of these spam messages contain viruses that affect your computer and contain things that will bring down your firewall to get in an access your personal files

Phishing is when someone is trying to gather information on you to steal your identity, this would be done by sending emails to people asking for questions such as what is your mother’s maiden name, or trying to find out security questions or passwords for example claiming that they work with a organization to find passwords or log in details. You can also just fish around the internet trying to find information on someone to pretend you are them and steal their identity, to commit thefts online or even steal from your bank account.

If there is no security that is protecting your customers/associates details, it can be a big problem and can be made to pay a fine or even in some circumstances face a jail term. If data is not protected correctly anyone can access your file or personal information and do whatever they wish with that information.

There are 50 users on the network and there was no log in for each user, all the 50 people can open each others files, copy their personal details or even edit their work, such as deleting assignments or stealing them. Each user should have their own personal log in username and password, so that the can assured that their files are secure.
